Professor Kamaldeep Bhui

Professor Kamaldeep Bhui is Director of the Cultural Consultation Service (CCS). In addition, he is part of the Environmental and Cultural Psychiatry Research Group at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine where he is also Director of the innovative MSc Transcultural Mental Health Care and MSc Psychological Therapies. Kamaldeep is also a Director of Careif.

Andrea Palinski MSc (Hons)

Team Manager/Cultural Consultant
(Medical Anthropologist)

Andrea Palinski is Team Manager at CCS. She is a Cultural Consultant, project manages clinical consultation referrals, and provides training and consultation at all levels. Andrea has a BA in Biology with a minor in Anthropology and an MSc in Medical Anthropology from UCL, London. She has experience as a Mental Health Clinical Case Manager, as an Organisational Consultant at SLaM, and is a Visiting Lecturer on clinical psychology programmes at the Institute of Psychiatry and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Dr Micol Ascoli MD (Hons) It

Consultant Psychiatrist & Research Fellow
(Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist)

Micol Ascoli is the Consultant Psychiatrist at CCS. She also works as a General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist for the East London NHS Foundation Trust in Newham, where she is the Clinical Lead for Cultural Psychiatry, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London. Micol graduated from ‘La Sapienza’ University of Rome with a Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1997, and completed her specialist training in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in 2002.

Dr John Owiti RMN. PhD

Cultural Consultant
(Registered Mental Health Nurse & Medical Anthropologist)

John Owiti is the Senior Nurse and Cultural Consultant at CCS. John has a BSc (Hons) in Anthropology from the University of East London, and an MSc in Medical Anthropology from University College London. He has worked in research in the Department of Anthropology at McGill University and as a Senior Mental Health Nurse at the John Howard Centre Medium Secure Unit in East London. In 2008 John was awarded a PhD in Medical Anthropology from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is also an Honorary Lecturer at the Department of Mental Health Nursing and Learning Disability at City University.

Dr Walid Khalid Abdul-Hamid

Dr Walid Khalid Abdul-Hamid (aka Hamid) is a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry at the Linden Centre, Chelmsford, Essex, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the Centre for Psychiatry, Barts and the London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry. He started his present clinical post in 2000 after completing a doctorate in Community Psychiatry at the University of London on the mental health needs of homeless people in Inner London. He later trained in Psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, London.

Words of Colour Productions has provided a range of tailored communications-focused consultancy and delivery to CCS since 2010. From developing CCS’s brand identity, producing press releases and media briefings to training the staff team in media relations and working on national media campaigns with the university’s central communications team, Words of Colour Productions has helped secure coverage in specialist, ethnic, regional and national media, such as Mental Health Today, Community Care, The Guardian, The Independent, Reuters, The Voice and Eastern Eye. It also provides multi media services, including filming, photographing and providing audio for events and social media platforms, as well as event management and social media support. It’s executive director Joy Francis has over 20 years experience in social policy media and consultancy and works with social care and health focused agencies such as Time to Change, Healthwatch Ealing, NHS England, Rethink, the Afiya Trust and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust.
